Intermedia (Introduction)


Sound sculptor and media artist Timo Kahlen (* 1966)
has been creating subtle, intriguing, eye- and earcatching,
temporary media sculptures and sound installations
for more than 30 years.

Presenting challenges to our imagination and perception,
Kahlen has chosen to work with new, often unusual,
transient and ‘immaterial‘ media: with wind and steam,
with light and shade, with pixels and dust, with sound,
vibration and noise.

"It‘s a paradox. In the dirty twittering,
gurgling, hissing, roaring, growling, whistling,
thundering, humming, droning, grinding,
snapping, rustling and crackling noises
we discover unexpected beauty...”




Biography


Born in Berlin in 1966. Studies at the Hochschule der
Kuenste Berlin with Prof. Dieter Appelt from 1985 - 1994.
Since 1985 assistant work for the Ruine der Kuenste Berlin.
Master of Fine Arts (Meisterschueler) at Hochschule der Kuenste
Berlin in 1993. Lectureship on Visual Media / Video Art
at the art departments of the Humboldt-Universitaet and
the Hochschule der Kuenste Berlin from 1993 to 1998.
Showcased at Prize for Young European Photographers 1989.
Nominated for the Kahnweiler-Prize for Sculpture 2001.
Nominated for the German national Sound Art Prize 2006
(Deutscher Klangkunst-Preis 2006) and finalist for the Jon Schueler
Scholarship 2017 at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Isle of Skye / Scotland,
in cooperation with the Royal Scottish Academy and the
Jon Schueler Trust, New York. Invitations to 'Timo Kahlen:
Works with Wind' inaugurating the Kunst-Werke Berlin in 1991 /
Manifesta 7 'Scenarios', Italy 2008 / 'Tonspur expanded: The
Loudspeaker', Vienna 2010 / 'The Unknown: Mediations Biennale',
Poznan 2012 and  'Sound Art: Sound as a Medium of Art',
ZKM Karlsruhe 2012. Critical recognition at more than 250 solo and
group exhibitions of contemporary media art since the mid-1980s.
Kahlen teaches, lives and works in Berlin.
